about

Crafting an eclectic group of pieces for analog electronics, prepared piano, saxophone and a variety of other knick-knacks, Epstein’s score for Nam June Paik: Moon Is The Oldest TV takes inspiration from the titular artist’s tactile and whimsical approach while deftly creating a dynamic portrait of an inimitable figure. “Butterfly” begins the collection with the phasing rhythms of a saxophone choir, soon joined by the undulating pulses of a Moog synthesizer to create a harmonious confluence of organic and electronic components that succinctly reflect Paik’s philosophy. The melodic information that emerges also retains an emotional directness that harkens to Paik’s pop sensibility and his enduring love of romantic classicists such as Debussy. Similarly, “Cage Cut” employs the prepared piano methods of Paik’s artistic father, John Cage, but wields them to yield a piece with an almost Springsteen-esque lift. Other works have a darker and more mysterious tone, such as “Mr. Orwell,” with its chiming pulse and mournful cadence of mangled winds, or “A Boat In The Ocean,” with its exploration of microtonal juxtapositions. But even these tracks, gesturing at the many hardships Mr. Paik had to endure, contain within them a sense of search and revelation that blossom beautifully when paired with director Amanda Kim’s buoyant montage. The collection concludes with “P.N.J. Theme” by Ryuichi Sakamoto, one of the last pieces written by the great composer, and an homage to his longtime friend and colleague.
