Suddenly Rain is an ecstatic love story told in three brief evocative scenes that cascade and erupt as Epstein unleashes the conflicting emotions that come when wrenching open one’s inner world to another. Performing with reckless abandon on nearly all the instruments, Epstein mixes pain and pleasure as he and his collaborators, poet and co-lyricist Maggie Millner and co-producer Michael Coleman, conjure moments of intimacy that sparkle with Wailers-like harmonies and explode with free-jazz inspired blasts of drums. Coleman contributes the blistering drum solo of the finale and longtime collaborator Dave Harrington tops it off with the feline wail of his slide guitar. At any minute it could all fall apart, but it hangs on triumphantly through the sheer joy of music making.
lyrics
long island sound
sing through the silence
stonewalling, i ain't crawling back
again
vibrating egg
pressed into your body
i wanna be it, i need to see it through
with you
suddenly rain
i know i cause you pain
saying too much
a fear i can’t contain
salt water kiss
under the fly strips
amber strings
dangling
little wings
suddenly rain
i know i cause you pain
saying too much
a fear i can’t contain
